Course Description: Therapeutic drawing is a fun and interactive method to engage children in play therapy. This highly experiential workshop will explore a range of therapeutic techniques for children and families, combining therapeutic drawing, collaborative storytelling, and embodiment. Working primarily from a Gestalt perspective, participants will identify drawing engagements specific to Gestalt Play Therapy and apply a Gestalt focus to commonly used therapeutic drawing interventions (e.g., Kinetic Family Drawing). However, attendees from all theoretical orientations will benefit from this workshop. Participants will also explore the ethical considerations for therapeutic drawing and identify ways to balance directive engagements within the therapeutic relationship.

Learning objectives:

  1. Discuss therapeutic drawing through the lens of expressive arts to facilitate creative expression in the play therapy process with children and families
  2. Describe ethical considerations when applying drawing as a therapeutic tool in the play therapy process
  3. Identify methods for applying therapeutic drawing to all phases of play therapy (i.e., intake, family integration, termination)
  4. Discuss how therapeutic drawing can facilitate embodiment, an essential component of Gestalt Play Therapy
  5. Apply the phenomenological process (a function of the Oaklander model) to therapeutic drawing
  6. Identify at least five drawing interventions to use with children and families in the context of play therapy
