Description of Workshop:

Gestalt play therapy (GPT) is a humanistic therapy characterized by experiential and here-and-now processing through a relational framework. Despite its recognition as a seminal theory by the Association of Play Therapy, the foundational principles remain a mystery to many. In this two-day, highly experiential workshop, attendees will learn the theoretical principles of Gestalt theory and how to integrate GPT with sandtray therapy.

Learning Objectives:

1. Identify foundational sandtray principles 
2. Compare Gestalt Play Therapy (GPT) sandtray to other sandtray models
3. Describe how sandtray facilitates integration from a GPT perspective
4. Discuss the importance of presence and the I-Thou relationship in facilitating sandtray play therapy sessions
5. Explain the role of contact in GPT and the indicators of contact disturbances
6. Explain the function of the cycle of awareness in GPT as it relates to sandtray 
7. Describe and experience methods of processing sandtray unique to GPT
8. Identify strategies to explore and integrate “parts” that commonly emerge in play therapy sessions
